First
American Corporation is now prospering by feeding on the CARCASS OF
AMERICA. They first gouged the public by inflating property values in
collusion with banks. They were sued
by New York's Attorney General for this practice but the damage was already
done. The housing bubble grew to an unsustainable level based on these bogus
assessments. The bubble blew according to plan and First American is now
profiting from the implosion. Compounding the problem, the soaring property
taxes resulting from First American's inflated assessments have accelerated the
foreclosure epidemic. Tax assessments are only linked to
increases in property values, NOT DECREASES! This deadly tax
'ratchet-effect' is causing millions of properties (particularly elderly owners)
to be lost to county sheriff's sales. First American's
vertically-integrated assessment, escrow and title services are mandated in
most states at every stage of the foreclosure and resale process, so...
...the more foreclosures, the more
profit for First American!
What
makes this scam particularly frustrating is that title insurance isn't even
necessary in this age of computerized records. The involvement of a
third-party in deed transfers can actually undermine the integrity
of your land ownership as was demonstrated in the landmark Dorrough Case (see
more below).
Iowa
is a role model for prohibition of the title insurance racket! The Iowa
Supreme Court has characterized title insurance in this way: The
Iowa Supreme Court has characterized title insurance as an “invidious form of
business.” See Chicago Title v. Huff, 256 NW 2nd 17 (Iowa 1977). This is
because in most instances, title insurance companies incur a zero loss ratio for
their products in the State of Iowa. In other words, they collect millions of
dollars in premiums yet pay out virtually nothing in losses. Why should Iowa
consumers send their money to big out of state corporations, when they can
obtain necessary title coverage in Iowa, and have their customers’ premiums
reinvested in the Iowa housing market through IFA programs.

Here is a copy of a letter written on January 8, of this year about the
criminal conduct of First American Corporation. Dozens of variations of the same
theme went out to Senator Boxer and Representative Sherman, not to mention most
of the parties on this letter's distribution list. For several years we have
been attempting to elicit some sort of federal law enforcement response to this
company's crimes against us and wide-ranging interstate crimes against millions
of families. As you can plainly see, WE REPEATEDLY WARNED of First American's
predatory, wild criminal conduct and its potential to literally undermine the
foundations of our economy. Tragically, any one of you might have prevented, or
at least mitigated, the irreparable damage done by this company to our nation
and its financial institutions.
Giant First American Corporation inflated and burst the housing bubble for
profit in collusion with banks. While many of the co-conspirator financial
institutions are now in ruins, First American continues to prosper as they pick
the bones of a devastated housing sector as the foreclosures and resale of
properties generate assessment, escrow and title business for this
vertically-integrated criminal enterprise. They stand to make hundreds of
millions of dollars on the financial Armageddon they helped to create. This is
particularly ironic since title insurance is now widely held to be a redundant,
even fraudulent product.
Senators, Representatives, et al, now that the chickens have come home to
roost, isn't it time to bring to justice at least one of the prime culprits in
the destruction of our way of life? We were the 'canaries in the coalmine'.
Would America be on the brink of a complete financial collapse had someone
responded to our complaints and warnings years or even months ago? As we've been
trying to tell you, our case with its interstate-fraud and RICO elements was,
and is the ideal vehicle to expose First American's criminal corporate culture
and pattern of subverting checks, balances and due process in every state of the
union. You have the power to force them to disgorge of their ill-gotten gains.

Our
family acquired a 16.2-acre plot of land in
Dane
County
,
Wisconsin
as a setting for a home and a unique broadcast/archiving complex.
This kind of space would also provide a means for us to preserve some of
the history of broadcasting and, at the same time, help gifted blind and
visually impaired people in the audio and broadcasting fields.
We
have been collecting and protecting rare and fragile transcriptions, tape
recordings, films, and documents for decades, including much of the overflow of
the UCLA record and transcription library. This
new property would be the perfect place to properly archive and preserve these
irreplaceable treasures of broadcasting’s “Golden Age”.
The
establishment of the first-of-its-kind, short wave radio service, for and by,
visually-impaired persons would dovetail perfectly with the massive audio
archive. The planned non-profit, low
profile, residential operation, would be no more noticeable to the widely spaced
neighbors than a typical Ham Radio station.
Due to the unique characteristics of short-wave radio, even at the
planned modest power levels, the signals would still be heard across the nation.
The benefits to the sightless broadcaster would be apprenticeship and
sense of achievement, to those visually impaired listeners, an endless array of
diverse programs created for radio, a medium that told vivid stories and
entertained without visual cues. The
program mix would not only include vintage radio plays but new productions from
a largely untapped reservoir of creative talent.
With
buildings and antennas already in place, just as we were about to apply for our
broadcast license we were shocked to see ground-stakes outlining what looked
like a non-conforming, residential construction project directly under our
antenna array. The FCC would not
look favorably on a radiated signal so close to a residential structure.
The house was being constructed on a triangle of land only a fraction of
the size required for residential development.
The home and outbuildings not only violated the set-backs, one building
was partly ON our property. The
broadcast station was effectively scuttled through a fraudulent deed revision,
filed without our consent or knowledge based on a forged real estate transfer
return.
Two
years after the fact, the seller and title company transferred a 1.2-acre strip
of our land back to the seller to form a corridor between the substandard parcel
and a larger parcel. The made the
small lot under our antenna ‘viable’ for development.
We have been victims of local officials more interested in maximizing the
value of their own adjacent properties than with the rule of law.
Strangely, It has been difficult to convince officials at any level that
apparent deed forgery, interstate wire-fraud and conspiracy are worthy of
investigation.
Local
land owners and corporations with large stakes in local development projects
may have seen a facility serving a special
needs community as a threat to their planned upscale housing developments.
As you can see from the photographs, the complex is the essence of good
taste, and only the worst kind of bigot would object to its special purpose.
The
toll on our family has been devastating. The
diversion of creative energy and resources is tragic, but worst of all a unique
broadcast operation aimed at an under-served group is stillborn.
The counterfeit ’cut and paste’ survey and deed documents describing
our property are still on file and have rendered the property a white elephant
saddled with massive, punitive property taxes.
We’re still seeking the advice, legal or otherwise to help salvage at
least a part of our recorded heritage before time and the elements erase the
